Why you keep losing the early game in Iron Dominion

July 13, 2026 · Markus Feldmann

Almost everyone plays Iron Dominion the same wrong way at first, myself included. You see all those resource nodes on the map and you sprint to claim them. Then an opponent hits your undefended edges and the whole thing unravels.

The better approach is boring: hold a small, tight territory you can actually defend. Pick two or three chokepoints and put your resources into keeping them. A compact base with strong walls beats a sprawling one with holes every single time.

Timing your first expansion is the real skill. Wait until your core is stable, scout where the enemy is committing, and then push into the gap. Expanding blind is how you end up fighting on three fronts at once.

Once I started thinking defensively first, my win rate climbed fast. Iron Dominion isn't about having the most land early — it's about not losing what you've already got.
